Don’t be confused, because in the tuning scene, the well-known pop-off valve has many names, but it always refers to the same component. A blow-off valve or a relief valve is simply another name for a pop-off valve. This useful component gets its name from its functions. The valve in question handles excess pressure from the intake tract and ensures a controlled release.
The pop-off valve is necessitated by the throttle valve. When you press the accelerator pedal and accelerate your car, the exhaust turbine is set in motion by the exhaust flow – the air in the intake tract is compressed and the pressure rises. If you then decide to stop accelerating, the throttle valve closes – but the turbocharger continues to run due to the exhaust flow mentioned earlier. It quickly becomes clear that pressure builds up here, which can no longer escape due to the closed throttle valve – and this is exactly where the 1.8T pop-off valve comes into play. The additional “outlet” allows the pressure to escape, counteracting accelerated material fatigue. A distinction is made between two different valves:
Open valves
Here, pros and cons go hand in hand: Unlike the closed model, the air is directed directly from the vehicle into the atmosphere during exhaust, creating the “hissing” sound that many tuners aim to achieve. The downside: The hissing sound is caused by air that has already been measured by the mass airflow sensor being expelled, which means an incorrect air value is always fed into the calculated fuel quantity – potentially leading to engine problems.
Closed valves
Models such as the Aluminum Pop-Off Piston Valve can be found in our online shop as a so-called “closed valve.” This term means that the released pressure is not vented to the outside environment but is instead directed back into the intake tract. The 1.8 Turbo tuning for pop-off valves is suitable for vehicles whose engines use a turbocharger as standard – perfect for improving the car’s lifespan.
What benefits can you expect?
1.8T tuning is as diverse as the models and car brands for which it is available. In addition to replacing entire Turbochargers, via the Rennkat , all the way to completely new Clutches is all included.
As with all parts in our range, these are approved components, which means their operation is stable and safe for both the vehicle and the driver. However, not all elements are approved for public road use, which is why we explicitly point this out again regarding the open valve: Permitted for racing only! If you’re unsure which tuning parts are also suitable for the road, the TÜV is the ultimate authority – only with the appropriate approval will your vehicle be legally drivable after modification.
