Since the turbocharger is electronically controlled by the engine control unit, boost pressure can be drastically increased through software optimization (ECU Tune). Higher boost pressure always means higher intercooler temperatures. To prevent the dreaded power dip (heat soak) in the summer, an upgraded intercooler kit is essential. Our intercooler kits (preferably in robust bar-and-plate design) drastically cool the intake air. This ensures higher oxygen density in the cylinder and protects the engine from knocking.
A turbocharger can only force in as much air as it can expel from the back.
Tuning Exhaust Manifold & Downpipe: A large-diameter upgrade downpipe (ideally with a 200-CPI racing catalytic converter) significantly reduces exhaust backpressure and the thermal load on the turbocharger. The turbo spools up significantly faster (better response), and when combined with a sports exhaust system that reduces backpressure, it produces the unmistakable, throaty TFSI growl.
The original rubber hoses in the intercooler system tend to swell under increased boost pressure or become porous when exposed to extreme heat. Our fabric-reinforced silicone hoses are completely dimensionally stable, withstand extreme pressures well over 2 bar, and guarantee a constant, loss-free airflow.
Comprehensive TFSI tuning also includes correcting known factory defects:
Charge Air Bypass Valve (SUV): The original valves with rubber diaphragms are prone to tearing under increased boost pressure. We recommend replacing them with the more robust piston-type version (e.g., from the Golf 6 R) or a reinforced GFB DV+ valve.
PCV Fix (crankcase ventilation): A faulty PCV valve causes a loss of boost pressure and carbon buildup on the intake valves. An integrated PCV Fix or a catch-can system provides a permanent solution to this problem.
Once the mechanical components—such as your new Turbo-parts upgrade turbocharger, downpipe, and intercooler—have been installed, the next step is an ECU tune. During this map / ECU tune process, the engine control unit is precisely calibrated to the new flow and temperature conditions.
