The operation is quite simple:

When closed, the exhaust gases are routed through the muffler; as soon as the flap is open a portion passes through a continuous pipe, making the exhaust louder. The vacuum-controlled flap is closed in the vacuum range; it opens as soon as the vacuum decreases or, for turbo engines, when it goes into overpressure. A hose is routed from the intake manifold to the flap's vacuum unit, or the flap is operated via remote control or a switch. For this purpose, a pulse valve is installed in the hose.
