Anyone in motorsports who wants to extract the absolute maximum in power and torque from their turbocharged engine will quickly reach the limits of what’s possible with conventional catalytic converters. A 100-CPI catalytic converter (100 cpsi) is the uncompromising tuning solution for race cars and extreme performance projects. It almost completely eliminates restrictive exhaust backpressure and offers the maximum physically possible flow for engines from the VAG Group and other high-power applications.
At Turbo-parts.de, you’ll find high-strength 100-CPI metal cores and monoliths for welding, specifically designed to withstand the extreme thermal and mechanical stresses of the racetrack.
Reducing the cell density to just 100 CPI per square inch fundamentally changes the dynamics of the entire exhaust system:
Minimal backpressure: Exhaust gases can pass through the matrix’s extremely large channels almost unimpeded. This ensures a drastic reduction in backpressure immediately after the turbocharger.
Aggressive response: With the reduced resistance in the exhaust pipe, the turbocharger spools significantly faster (spool-up). The result is noticeably more direct throttle response and a wider usable RPM range.
Radical thermal relief: Faster exhaust gas removal means that heat is dissipated directly from the cylinder head and exhaust valves. This lowers combustion chamber temperatures and protects turbocharger components from overheating, even under sustained full load.
In the high-performance sector, there is a persistent myth that a catalytic converter with such a low cell density can no longer achieve any significant filtering effect. However, this is incorrect: The cleaning performance does not depend primarily on the number of cells, but on the uncompromising quality of the precious metal coating.
Since the channels in a 100-CPI monolith are extremely large, the exhaust gas flows through the matrix at a noticeably higher speed. The contact time between the exhaust gas and the surface is thus significantly reduced. To still achieve highly efficient chemical pollutant conversion within this minimal time window, our premium racing catalysts use an extremely highly concentrated washcoat.
This dense coating of the most precious metals (platinum, palladium, and rhodium) maximally accelerates the chemical reaction. This means: You get maximum flow for extreme performance gains, while the system still delivers highly efficient exhaust gas purification with clean, professional software tuning.
Our 100-CPI monoliths are designed for tough track day and racing use. Unlike brittle OEM ceramic catalysts, the wound, highly stable metal matrix effortlessly withstands extreme mechanical shocks, vibrations, and the misfires common in motorsports (pops & bangs / backfiring).
The advanced surface coating is designed for continuous temperatures well above $950^\circ\text{C}$, so that the precious metals do not evaporate even under extreme heat. A single 100-cell core is rated for peak power outputs of up to approx. 450 hp. For high-displacement or extremely turbocharged projects (such as the VR6 Turbo or R32 Turbo), the throughput limit can easily be doubled using a parallel-connected bi-cat system.
