As the connecting link between the piston and the crankshaft, the 1.8T connecting rod is designed to convert the reciprocating motion of the cylinders into a circular motion. This defines its primary purpose: to drive the crankshaft. Due to the high stress involved, you will find only tested models made of solid steel here, which guarantee quality even over the long term. The connecting rod is therefore engineered so that its two ends mate precisely with the other components without becoming wedged due to dynamic movements. The end connected to the piston is called the rod end, and the end connected to the crankshaft is called the rod head.

Don’t be surprised if you order connecting rods and find them lighter than expected. This is because the connecting rod is constantly working to transfer the linear up-and-down motion of the piston. Stresses in the form of bending and kinking, as well as tension and compression, act on the individual parts, which is why the connecting rods are designed to be slightly lighter while still ensuring maximum strength.

Identifying connecting rod damage

Its main function is to convert linear motion into rotational motion – at the point where this occurs, the connecting rod and crankshaft are connected by a ring containing the corresponding connecting rod bearings. If, after years of use, signs of wear appear or the bearings even break, this is referred to as connecting rod bearing failure. An annoying problem, but one that can be solved quite quickly – you can easily find a new connecting rod in our online shop, and it will be delivered safely packaged right to your doorstep!

A 1.8T connecting rod is a fixed component on which no additional holes may be drilled under any circumstances. Also, don’t be surprised if the connecting rods bend slightly over time. Due to constant movement, round openings can sometimes become slightly oval – this has nothing to do with incorrect engine performance and is due to the connecting rod itself. While replacement is not a problem, preventing damage should not be either. With proper maintenance, connecting rods typically run smoothly for up to 300,000 kilometers – if premature wear is nevertheless noticed, it usually has the following causes:

• Operation is indicated by persistently low oil pressure

• incorrect replacement or refilling of engine oil

The connecting rod is normally equipped with a hollow channel to ensure the transport of lubricants to the piston pin. Here, too, refilling should always be done according to the instructions. Another common issue is the improper replacement of the oil filter, which can cause contact between the bearing and the crankshaft – resulting in engine failure.
