In short: The exhaust gas turbocharger consists of a compressor and turbine, which are connected to each other by a so-called shaft. During operation, the engine produces exhaust gases, which are then routed to the turbine and drive it – creating the energy needed for the compressor. Compared to a naturally aspirated engine, the turbo boasts lower consumption – because some of the exhaust gases that would otherwise be released into the ambient air are redirected and converted into energy for more vehicle performance.

Convenient thanks to plug&play solution

As a rule, the turbochargers are plug&play models: this means that the old turbocharger is replaced with the new one without anything having to be modified afterwards. With the exception of the ball-bearing EFR turbos the other models are plain-bearing, which can also be repaired or overhauled. Such plug&play solutions are especially popular in tuning because they can also be installed by hobby mechanics without much experience.

Depending on the model, the turbo fits 1:1 and is simply replaced with the original. All connections are the same as the original, except for the turbo inlet, which may be slightly larger. The software must also be adapted to the corresponding turbo.  With the right ECU tuning, up to 300 hp is possible depending on the 1.8T Borgwarner upgrade turbocharger.
